What Is US Package Forwarding, and How Does It Actually Work?

Package forwarding gives you a US shipping address so you can buy from US-only stores and have it shipped internationally. Here's exactly how the process works, step by step.

By Rahul Bohara, founder of Shipbird. He runs our Austin hub.

Type "package forwarding usa" into Google and you'll get a dozen services, all describing themselves slightly differently, none of them explaining the actual mechanic in plain terms. It's a simple idea once you see it: a US shipping address that isn't your house, that forwards whatever lands in it to wherever you actually live.

The short version

A US retailer won't ship to your country, or the shipping quote it gives you at checkout is absurd. Package forwarding solves that by giving you a real US street address to use instead of your own. The retailer ships domestically, like any other US order. The forwarder receives it, then ships it onward to you internationally, usually at a much better rate than the retailer would have quoted you directly, since forwarders consolidate volume across thousands of shipments.

You're never buying anything through the forwarder in this model. You've already found the item, already paid the retailer directly with your own card, and you already own what's in the box. The forwarder's only job is getting it the rest of the way to you.

How it actually works, step by step

  1. You sign up and get a US address. With Shipbird, this is a dedicated suite number at our Austin, TX hub, tied to your account. It's a real street address, not a PO box, so it works at any US retailer's checkout.
  2. You shop normally, using that address at checkout. You pay the retailer directly, with your own card, at the same price any US shopper pays. Nothing about the purchase itself changes.
  3. The package arrives at the hub. You get notified. If you're only shipping this one item, you can ship it out right away. If you're expecting more, it sits in free storage for up to 30 days while you wait.
  4. You consolidate, if you want to. This is the part that actually saves money on international shipping: instead of paying for three separate international shipments, you combine three packages into one. Retail boxes get stripped down and repacked into the smallest safe carton, which cuts the dimensional weight that international carriers bill against.
  5. It ships out via discounted FedEx Express. You see the exact rate before committing to anything, no surprise invoice waiting at the other end. Run your own numbers on the shipping calculator before you ship anything.

What package forwarding doesn't do

It's worth being specific about the limits, since some services blur this. A package forwarder doesn't buy anything for you. If a store refuses your card outright, or won't sell to an international billing address at all, a US address at checkout doesn't fix that, because you never get that far. That's a different problem, solved by a different service: Personal Shopping, sometimes searched as a "buy for me" service, where Shipbird makes the purchase on your behalf with a US-issued card.

If you're not sure which one your situation needs, the quick test is: has the purchase already happened? Already bought it and just need it forwarded → package forwarding. Haven't been able to buy it yet → Personal Shopping. The full breakdown is here if you want the complete comparison.

Why consolidation is where the real savings are

The headline discount on shipping rate matters less than most people expect once you look at an actual invoice. International carriers bill on dimensional weight, box size multiplied by a fixed factor, not just the item's actual weight, and a single sneaker box or a small electronics package often has more empty air in it than product. Combine three of those into one repacked carton and the dimensional weight drops by more than the shipping rate alone ever could. That's the mechanism behind most of the savings people associate with package forwarding, more than any specific carrier discount.

What a US address actually costs you to hold

Nothing, as long as you're moving packages through it within a reasonable window. Shipbird's 30 days of free storage per package is meant to cover the normal case: you're waiting on two or three more items from a sale or a restock before you ship everything together. If a shipment genuinely needs more time than that, ask, extensions are usually possible rather than a hard cutoff.

What can go wrong (and doesn't have to)

A package forwarder that just relabels boxes and ships them, sight unseen, can't catch a problem before it becomes your problem: the wrong item, a damaged box, something that shouldn't be shipped internationally at all. Shipbird's hub opens and inspects what arrives before it goes back out, so a mismatch or damage gets caught at the Austin hub, not discovered by you after a multi-week international transit. If you're curious what that visibility actually looks like on an order, here's what happens after you hit buy.

Frequently asked questions

What is package forwarding?

Package forwarding gives you a US shipping address, sometimes called a suite or mailbox number, that you use at checkout with any US retailer. The forwarder receives the package on your behalf, then ships it on to your actual address internationally. You're not buying anything through the forwarder; you're just borrowing a US address so a store that won't ship to you directly still will.

How much does package forwarding cost?

With Shipbird, you only pay for the shipping itself, at a discounted FedEx Express rate. There's no separate handling fee, no membership, and consolidation is always free. Since you already own what's in the box, there's no item cost or purchasing fee either, that only applies to Personal Shopping.

Do I need an account to use package forwarding?

Yes. You need a Shipbird account to get your dedicated suite number, which takes about a minute to set up. Once you have it, that address is yours to use at checkout with any US retailer going forward.

How long will a forwarder hold my packages?

Shipbird holds each package for 30 days of free storage, counted from the day it arrives at our Austin hub. If you're waiting on more items to arrive before consolidating a shipment, message us and we can usually extend that window.

Can I combine multiple packages into one shipment?

Yes, and it's free with no limit on how many packages you combine. We open each one, strip out the excess retail packaging, and repack everything into the smallest safe carton, which is usually what keeps your shipping cost down the most.

What can't be forwarded internationally?

The same restrictions that apply to any international shipment: no weapons, no lithium batteries shipped loose, no aerosols or flammables, no perishables, and nothing that infringes IP rights. If a package arrives with something prohibited, we contact you before doing anything with it rather than just disposing of it.
