Shipping From the US to Saudi Arabia: The SAR 1,000 Rule, VAT, and Transit Times
Shipping from the US to Saudi Arabia: the SAR 1,000 duty exemption, the 15% VAT that still applies, ZATCA's clearance fee and realistic transit times.

Shipping to Saudi Arabia has a rule that's worth knowing before you buy anything: a duty exemption that stops at a specific number, and a VAT that doesn't stop at all.
The SAR 1,000 line
Personal online-store shipments are exempt from customs duty when their total value is under SAR 1,000. And that total counts the goods, the shipping and the insurance together, not just the price of the item. So a 900-riyal item with expensive shipping can cross the line.
Above it, duty applies. The baseline across the GCC is 5%, but Saudi Arabia raised duty on more than 2,000 tariff lines in 2020, some to 25%. The rate depends on the product, so I won't give you one number. ZATCA, the Saudi customs authority, has a duty calculator that gives the rate for a specific item. Use it before ordering anything over the line.
The part that doesn't go away: VAT
15% VAT applies to all personal imports, including ones under SAR 1,000. It's charged on the goods plus shipping, insurance, duty and fees. People see "exempt from duty" and assume nothing is due. VAT is.
ZATCA also charges a SAR 15 customs-declaration fee on online-store shipments up to SAR 1,000.
All of that is collected in Saudi Arabia on arrival, not at Shipbird checkout. One practical note: carriers typically ask for a National ID or Iqama number for the recipient, so have it handy.
What the shipping itself costs
Billable weight is the greater of actual and dimensional weight (length × width × height in inches, divided by 139), and the tier you pick sets the rest. Here's a live quote so the number isn't typed into a post and left to rot:

Transit times
From Shipbird's Austin hub, FedEx International Priority runs 3-5 business days and Economy runs 5-7 business days. That's transit only. Customs clearance on the Saudi side is the part nobody can promise to the day.
How to stay under the line
If your order is close to SAR 1,000, the quickest lever is shipping cost, since it counts toward the total. Choosing the slower Economy tier, or shipping a lighter, better-packed box, can pull the all-in figure back under the line. Splitting one order into several parcels purely to dodge the limit isn't something I'd recommend.
Putting it together
For a typical order you'll pay: the item (if we're buying it), our fee if it's a Personal Shopping order, the shipping quote, then 15% VAT and the small declaration fee in Saudi Arabia. Stay under SAR 1,000 all-in and you skip duty.
If you want us to buy from a US store for you, the Saudi Arabia guide covers that side, and the Ship to Saudi Arabia page has a live quote form.
