How Much Does It Cost to Ship From the US to Australia?

What drives the price of shipping a package from the US to Australia: billable weight, dimensional weight, zone, and what Australian customs adds on arrival.

Search "shipping from USA to Australia" and you'll mostly find a wall of carrier rate tables that assume you already know your zone, your billable weight and which service you want. Most people don't. They've got a box, a rough idea of what's in it, and a simple question: what's this going to cost me?

Here's how the number is actually built, so you can sanity-check any quote you get, ours included.

The two things that set the price

Billable weight and destination zone. That's most of it.

Billable weight is the greater of two numbers: what the box weighs on a scale, and its dimensional weight. Dimensional weight is length × width × height (in inches) ÷ 139. A pillow-sized box of sweaters might weigh 4 lb and have a dimensional weight of 12 lb. You pay for 12.

That's why the same item can price very differently depending on how it's packed. A shoebox with the shoes inside, plus the retail box, plus a bit of filler, often costs more to send than the shoes alone in a snug carton. It's also why Shipbird repacks orders into the smallest safe box at the Austin hub before anything leaves.

Australia sits in its own FedEx zone, so there's no using a domestic rate as a guide. Then there's the service: FedEx Express comes in a faster tier and a slower, cheaper one, and we show both side by side so you can choose.

What a real box looks like

Here's a live quote for a typical box, a laptop in its retail packaging. It reads current rates, so the number you see is today's, not one typed into this post months ago.

What's not in that number: Australian customs

Shipping cost is one thing. What Australia adds when the package lands is another, and it's the part that surprises people.

Goods worth A$1,000 or less generally pay no customs duty or GST at the border. Alcohol and tobacco are the exceptions, taxed at any value, and you can't split an order into smaller parcels to stay under the line. Separately, larger overseas sellers and redeliverers collect 10% GST at checkout once their Australian sales pass A$75,000 a year, which is why some US stores add it to your cart.

Above A$1,000, GST is 10% of the customs value plus duty and international transport and insurance. Duty itself is either nothing or 5% on most tariff lines, depending on what the item is.

Declared value should match what you actually paid. Under-declaring doesn't save money, it risks a hold.

Cheaper ways to bring the number down

  • Consolidate. Three small boxes cost more than one medium one. If you're buying from several US stores, have them all land at your Shipbird address and ship together.
  • Let the box shrink. Retail packaging is mostly air. We repack at the hub, but even choosing a compact item over a bulky one at the start helps.
  • Pick the right tier. If you're not in a hurry, the slower FedEx Express tier is cheaper. Not every parcel needs to be fast.

Getting a number for your own box

Put your weight and dimensions into the calculator. It's the same engine the quote runs on. If you want us to buy the item too, the Australia guide covers how that works, and the Ship to Australia page has the live quote form.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to ship a package from the US to Australia?

It depends on billable weight, which is the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight, and on the service you pick. A small, dense box and a large, light one can price very differently. The shipping calculator gives you a real number from your own box dimensions, no account needed.

Do I pay GST or duty when a package arrives in Australia?

Goods worth A$1,000 or less generally pay no customs duty or GST at the border, though tobacco and alcohol are taxed at any value and orders can't be split to stay under the limit. Larger overseas sellers and redeliverers may collect 10% GST at checkout instead.

What is dimensional weight and why does it matter?

Dimensional weight is length times width times height, divided by 139 for inches. If it's higher than what the box actually weighs on a scale, the carrier bills the higher number. Bulky, lightly packed boxes are where it bites.
